Ready to Compete – South Africa’s BPO Capabilities in the Financial Services Sector

This complimentary report explores the role of South Africa as an emerging destination for BPO. This study, conducted on behalf of South Africa’s Business Trust, presents a fact-based view of South Africa’s current BPO capabilities and potential for growth in the Financial Services (FS) sector. The study highlights South Africa’s key differentiators relative to other offshore destinations such as India and the Philippines and the risks and tradeoffs that investors need to consider.

The FS-focused BPO industry in South Africa has established credible scale, employing ~11,000 employees in service providers (suppliers and offshore captives) and an additional 65,000-75,000 people in domestic captives of South African FS organizations. Further, the service provider industry has established credible delivery maturity across FS client sub-verticals (namely retail banking, insurance, and asset management) and across BPO functions (both front- and back-office).

While, current offshore activity is nascent, there is significant potential for growth. The four key drivers are:

  1. Experienced talent pool with service delivery and domain skills in the domestic FS sector
  2. Sizeable talent pool with specialized FS skills
  3. Narrowing of savings gap with other low-cost locations
  4. Availability of scalable high-quality English skills at a low cost
